Weekend Ramblings

As I mentioned yesterday, we went to Coralville to watch Aunt TJ's dance competition on Sunday.

Let's start by saying they dominated the whole thing -- ton's of platiunums (I lost count) and her big group number got 149 out of a possible 150 points, making them the highest scoring group of the day. Allison won a coreography award, Holly got first overall for her solo...they were by far, the best group there.

Plus, everyone thought Nora was adorable! Get this -- TJ actually held Nora! Now to fully understand the level of shock this brought when she asked, she has only held her one other time e.v.e.r. and only becuase Mimi made her for a photo.

Saturday we went shopping and bought Nora her first swimsuit. My standards were high because I was persistant that it must be a bikini - come on, look how cute it is!

Later we got to go swimming at the hotel, and she loved it!

After swimming Saturday night, we drove up to Swisher and stayed the night with Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Chris.

Max is getting SO big. He was holding Nora by the ears giving her kisses. It was positively adorable!

Sunday was competition day. We were there from about 9:30 a.m. until aroud 5 when we decided to take off because bad weather was headed our way. I'm glad we got to go though!

I sure am blessed to have such a content baby that lets me drag her around and out and about without a complaint.

Carrots: Attempt #2

Nora had her first jarred baby food yesterday. I had a jar of carrots from a game we played at my baby shower, so we decided to give them a try even though her reaction to homemade carrots was less than pleasant.

She ate them. I wouldn't say she loved them, but she ate them. They were SUPER runny, so I actually added some oatmeal to prevent her from blowing carrot filled raspberries all over me and the rest of the kitchen. Oddly, Charlie and I agreed they smelled like tomato sauce; but hey, if she'll eat them that's all that matters right?

We also had our 6 month well-baby visit yesterday. Nora weighs 16 pounds -- up 2 pounds from last month! She is in the 25th percentile for weight and 10th percentile for height and head circumference.

She got her final dose of rotavirus and DTaP #3, and as usual, she took it like a champ. She will have shots again next month, and then she finally gets a few months off after having them every month for 6 months in a row.

I have lots to say and great photos to share about our trip to Coralville this weekend, but I am waiting for Mimi and Aunt Tiffany to upload their photos because they both got more than I did. We had lots of fun though. Everyone raved about how Nora is the happiest baby in the world -- I think I have to agree! Here's a sneak preview:

No Longer Just Adam and Eve (in Iowa)

So this is not my regular milestone, baby, family type post -- its definitely political and its certainly controversial -- but it is also one that deserves to be documented in the scrapbook, so I'm going to go there.

For those of you who have not heard, the bill that made gay marriage illegal was ruled unconstitutional by an unanimous vote of the Iowa supreme court today. I got teary reading the Register article -- this will no doubt be a chapter in the history books right behind the women's movement and the abolishment of slavery, and we lived it.

Now, I love Iowa as much as the next country girl, but I didn't see this coming. I truly didn't think Iowa would ever pass this, let alone be one of the first! I'm not trying to start the next world war on Nora's blog here, and I know many, many people don't agree with the ruling, but without question I believe that the next generation will look back at this and question the narrowmindedness of those who allowed this to be illegal for so long. Gay marriage bans will be viewed in the future as we view patriarchy today.

Its really incredible the historical events that have occurred in the last year. We -- as a state and a nation -- are finally starting to progess again after a couple of lull decades that almost seemed to move backward.

Baby of the Month

Nora's famous. I sent in her photo to a worldwide homemade baby food website and she got an honorable mention! You can see her here. How cool?!?

Speaking of homemade baby food, we tried avacado yesterday. It was my first time trying it too, and I think Nora liked it more than I did.

We've been inching into finger foods, but she doesn't really get the concept yet. Ironically, any- and everything she can get her hands on goes into her mouth...except food I give her to put in her mouth. She just opens wide and waits for me to put it in there for her.

I thought avacado would be a good one to dice instead of puree because it is so soft it just mushes. She did well with it (though daddy was paranoid and came to cut up the chunks smaller). In addition to the chunks of avacado, we have also tried Gerber puffs. I got some banana flavored ones and again, she doesn't pick them up, and she's pretty indifferent to eating them -- doesn't really seem to enjoy nor dislike them.
